Pool Maintenance Tips
Maintenance in the Houston area is less about generic pool-care advice and more about the specific climate and soil conditions here.
Houston-area summers mean the pool and its equipment run hard for most of the year; a properly sized pump and filter, and a plaster or pebble finish rated for year-round sun exposure, save on repair calls down the line.
Heavy spring and fall rain events are normal here, so deck grading and drainage around the pool are built to move stormwater away from both the pool structure and the house foundation, not just off the coping.
Houston Pools Don't Really Have an "Off Season"
Most pool-care advice online is written for climates with a real winter: close it in October, open it in April. In the Houston area, pools typically run year-round with only brief weather-driven slowdowns, which means the equipment, chemical balance, and filter all stay under more consistent demand than a seasonal-pool guide assumes. Plan maintenance around that, not around a closing/opening calendar that doesn't apply here.
What We're Seeing on New Builds
Negative-edge and vanishing-edge details are increasingly requested on sloped lots, though they need the right grade or an engineered catch basin to work.
Resurfacing Timeline
Plaster and pebble finishes generally need resurfacing every 10 to 15 years depending on water chemistry and usage; staining, roughness, or visible wear are the signs it's due. That's covered under Pool Repair along with equipment replacement.
Algae Control Basics
Algae pressure in the Houston area is higher than in drier climates because of the combination of heat, humidity, and a long pool season. A consistent sanitizer level, regular brushing (especially in shaded or low-circulation corners), and a filter sized correctly for the pool's volume are the baseline; if algae keeps coming back despite consistent chemical treatment, that usually points to a circulation or filtration issue rather than a chemistry one.

Need a repair, not just a tip?
If your pool is losing water, cracking, or the equipment isn't keeping up, that's a repair, not a maintenance task. See Pool Repair.
